International Workers' Day, otherwise known as Labour Day or May Day, is a celebration of the labouring class and their contribution to society, celebrated on May 1st.

What is International Workers' Day?

International Workers' Day begun in the late-19th century where socialists, communists and trade unionists chose May 1 to become the date for this day. It was a symbolic date, commemorating the Haymarket affair where in Chicago in 1886 striking workers confronted strikebreakers and both protestors and police officers were killed.

How can I celebrate International Workers' Day?

Take to the streets to protest to commemorate International Workers' Day. The day is marked with celebrations, protests, strikes and commemorations around the world. For labour rights campaigners this day is particularly important. May Day is a national public holiday in several European countries, such as the UK, where Morris dancing around a maypole has become the tradition!
